Virginia Tech Communications Professor Discusses Impact of Social Media on Communication Skills

BLACKSBURG, VA -- Zach Sowder is a professor in the School of Communication at Virginia Tech. He teaches courses related to communication skills and interpersonal communication which brings expertise to the subject field.


In this day-and-age, communication is a cornerstone daily life. Social media go together communication particularly as social media comes more to the forefront in this generation. Social media has become incredible prevalent in the younger generations and the surge in usage has come increasingly evident.  


 “The increase in social media usage has raised concerns about its impact on professional relationships and interpersonal communication”, said Professor Zach Sowder. There are currently lawsuits going on pertaining to social media addiction and social media platforms targeting larger generations.


The legal actions being taken upon organizations such as Meta have underscored the urgency in addressing concerns.


In this generation, balancing digital literacy and interpersonal communication may assist in mitigating the adverse effects of social media usage.
