In a shocking turn of events, Virginia Tech’s Intramural Basketball has taken a poor turn early in the season due to uncontrollable injuries. Players have been slipping on the courts during gameplay due to humidity.
Referees, supervisors, and scorekeepers have voiced their concerns as the season continues. Chris Vaughn, a supervisor for Intramural Basketball said: “We noticed the issue during training and have been doing our best to keep fans going to help with the moisture.” This highlights Intramural's Sports commitment to eliminating the ongoing issue.
The impact of the damp floors on players is large, but referees have experienced difficulties as well. Mary Claire Mea, an Intramural Sport’s Referee said: “The wet courts have made reffing difficult because it’s hard to make certain calls like travels because sometimes people are just falling.”
This also brings about a challenge of maintaining a comfortable temperature for both employees and participants. Scorekeeper Corinne Fitzgerald stated: "Having the fans running all the time has made the bubble unbearably cold; I've had to bring a ton of extra layers just to keep warm." It is a dance figuring out how to keep everyone comfortable and safe.
As the season continues, the safety of the players is of top priority for Intramural Sports employees. Player's are being forewarned about the issue and safety and care are being emphasized.
Intramural Sport's is diligently trying to overcome these issues. Chris Vaughn said: "We're hopeful as the weather slowly starts to warm up, the moisture on the courts will go away."
